UMass TASC

TASC is a cultural registered student organization (RSO) at UMass Amherst that aims to promote awareness of Asian culture through education, performance, and choreography incorporating diabolo (Chinese yo-yo), dragon, and lion dance. The club was founded in 2015, and has grown to over 50 registered members in the UMass Amherst community today, welcoming members of all skill levels, with no prior experience necessary. From cultural events such as the Korean Student Association’s Streets of Seoul and the Asian American Student Association’s Asian Night, to the university’s Many Voices event welcoming new students to the UMass community, we’ve shared our performances across a wide variety of audiences, and hope to continue to do so!

TASC has lion dancers from Kung Fu schools like Calvin Chin and Nam Pai Academy located in Boston. We have participated in various lion dance competitions around the Boston area, and notably competed in the first USDLDF competition in Quincy. Our members have a background in teaching lion dance for the Asian American Cultural Center, and Kwong Kow Chinese School. In addition to performing traditional lion dancing in the Pioneer Valley, we hope to teach the history and culture of lion dance and why it's important to many Asian cultures.

In order to continue these traditions, we need yo-yo, dragon, and lion dance equipment for the club, and ask for your help to accomplish this! As some of this equipment can be quite costly, your donations in addition to our paid performances are crucial for being able to provide these supplies for the club and all the members. All donations will go directly to yo-yo’s/sticks/string, dragon dance equipment, and lion dance equipment. Thank you for your support!
