The North Shore Blue Economy Initiative

The North Shore Blue Economy initiative is led by the UMass Amherst Gloucester Marine Station in partnership with regional leaders across business, government, communities, research, and philanthropy. 

Our goal over the next 10 years, is to build and implement a resilient, sustainable, equitable, and integrated Blue Economy network – one that builds upon our strengths and positions the region to capitalize on emerging opportunities in the Blue Economy.

IMAGINE A NORTH SHORE, WHERE IN 10 YEARS…

  • Millions of dollars in public and private investment and access to capital sparks new Blue Economy enterprises and initiatives for entrepreneurs and accelerators.
  • Revolutionized sustainable seafood supply chain, with diverse and stable business strategies, reinvigorates our ports, processing capacity, and prosperity.
  • Northeast Center for Coastal Resilience provides leadership in climate resilience and serves as a hub for ideation, research, and application to regional businesses and communities.
  • Coordinated North Shore Blue Economy Network brings together hundreds of diverse business, government, nonprofit, investor, education, and research partners.
  • Workforce training and education programs retain the talent we grow in our colleges and universities and attracts new Blue Economy businesses.
  • Regional branding & marketing campaign spreads our vision of a resilient, sustainable and equitable Blue Economy, enabling anyone to see themselves as a part of this amazing region to live, work and play in.
  • Sustainable tourism & recreation strategies solidify our unique regional and community identities, promotes regional successes, and attracts targeted Blue Economy investment.



All gifts to the North Shore Blue Economy initiative are deeply appreciated and will be used to:

  • Match State funding program requirements

  • Fund Phase II research, engagement, and strategy development at the intersection of our regional Blue Economy strengths and opportunities:
    • An evolving sustainable seafood industry, 
    • A developing marine science & technology cluster, 
    • The potential for offshore wind in the Gulf of Maine, and 
    • Seizing increased state and federal investments in coastal resilience science, planning and preparation to safeguard our coastal ports, properties and people.

  • Support our NSBE Phase II focus areas to 
    • Grow the North Shore Blue Economy Network of diverse, regionally representative thought leaders across Blue Economy sectors.
    • Develop workforce training and education to drive Blue Economy job creation.
    • Brand & market the North Shore’s vision of a resilient, sustainable and equitable Blue Economy.
    • Fundraise and increase access to capital that will foster entrepreneurship and incubate Blue Economy enterprises and initiatives.
