The UMass Supermileage Vehicle Team, which consists of approximately twenty mechanical engineering students, is going to compete in this year’s Society of Automotive Engineers’ (SAE) International Supermileage competition in Marshall Michigan on June 8, 2017. As a part of the competition, we are tasked with the hands-on experience of designing and building a vehicle to achieve the highest fuel efficiency. This international collegiate competition also helps us increase public awareness of fuel efficient technologies and potentially set a new world fuel economy record.

In 1997, UMass participated in our first SAE Supermileage competition and took home first place among the US teams. Since then, the team has been working hard to improve performance every year. In 2014, we placed third in the competition with our current highest ever fuel economy of 1,142 miles per gallon of gasoline. In this year’s competition, the team is pushing to exceed 1,500 MPG. This requires a vehicle that is durable enough to perform high-mileage runs for extended periods of time around a track.
Teamwork is everything on the Supermileage Team. Here are two students working together on the 50cc engine. Attached to the engine is an Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) system while it's run on our in-house Dynamometer.
With your help, we hope to meet this goal and take home first place in the competition. Your support will allow us to purchase hardware such as a new electronic fuel injection system and cover travel expenses.
