Who Are We?
The UMass Amherst Concrete Canoe Team is part of the university’s American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) student chapter. Each year, ASCE hosts the Northeast regional Concrete Canoe Design Competition. This is a year-long challenge where students design, construct, and race a canoe made primarily of concrete.
Last year, our team successfully built, delivered, and raced our canoe. Although we placed 10th out of 12 teams, the experience gave us insight into what it truly takes to compete at this level. We may not have finished where we hoped, but we learned more than ever before about design, teamwork, and perseverance.
Now, with a year of competition experience behind us, we’re coming back stronger and more prepared. Our theme for the 2025–2026 season is The Industrial Revolution, blending classic engineering innovation with a steampunk-inspired aesthetic that celebrates creativity, progress, and grit, everything our team stands for. The mission for the 2025–2026 season is to take everything we learned and transform it into results. Our ultimate goal is to finish in the top five in the Northeast Region. We might have been underdogs last year, but this time, we’re ready to prove what UMass Amherst is capable of. More importantly, we’re continuing to build a space where young engineers can learn, grow, and support one another throughout their college experience.
What’s Our Plan?
The UMass Amherst Concrete Canoe Team is currently developing and testing our new concrete mix design. With the help of UMass faculty, we’re experimenting with different materials to find the perfect balance of strength, durability, and lightness. We’re also fabricating a brand-new mold that will form the foundation for this year’s canoe — one that’s faster, more refined, and more competitive. Once our mix design is finalized, we’ll move into the detailed calculation and design phase to ensure our canoe performs its best on race day.
Where Will Your Donations Go?
Every donation, big or small, helps our team continue to grow and compete. Your support will go toward competition registration fees, materials for building the full-scale canoe, and travel expenses to the regional symposium. Most importantly, it helps a determined group of engineering students take the lessons of last year and turn them into the success story of this season.
