UMass Rowing: 40 Ergometers in 40 Days!

To all of our Friends, Family, and Alumni of UMass Rowing,

You answered the call!!

We had 75 donors make gifts totaling $23,021 to meet the Athletic Director's Challenge. We had several UMass Rowing families make significant contributions to this effort, which set us up for success. THANK YOU! In total, we raised $28,021 towards our initial goal of $40,000. With the funds raised we will be able to purchase at least 22 ergs this season!

A few of our loyal donors asked us to keep the drive open for a few more days. So, if you wanted to contribute to this effort and did not get a chance, you still have time. We will keep the site open until the end of the day on Saturday, January 6th.

While we did not meet our goal of 40 Ergs in 40 days, we are excited with results and the impact it will have on our rowers this spring. With the Connecticut River already frozen over and winter just beginning, it is likely the women will be logging more miles indoors on the ergometers in the Spring of 2018. Knowing there are 22 new, working, & reliable ergometers to use in our erg cage at the end of February, the team will look forward to setting new personal records and raising the bar of UMass Rowing throughout their championship season and years to come!

You've made a direct impact on the performance of UMass Rowing this Spring. We can't thank our supporters enough for this wonderful opportunity and look forward to keeping you updated with our indoor and on the water results this spring. GO UMASS!

Warmest Regards,

Jim Dietz, Andrea Landry '09, James Dietz II, and Emma Carlisle

A Letter from the Coaches

Dear Alumnae, Family and Friends,

In recent years, the journey on and off the water has been rewarding for the UMass Women’s Rowing team with three NCAA appearances in 2014, 2015, and 2017. We’ve taken great pride in the progress the program has made and are committed to building upon this success through many avenues, one of which is our commitment to providing our student-athletes with state of the art facilities and equipment.

To provide the athletes of the UMass Rowing program with a new fleet of ergometers this spring would be a remarkable step forward in furthering the mission of our program. We often preach to our athletes, “Erging is half of your training”. By upgrading our current fleet of ergometers, we would provide the women with the tools they need to make individual gains necessary for big boat speed in the spring.

The fitness gains the women would experience from using fresh, working equipment would be undeniable, resulting in more athletes able to utilize machines that accurately represent their effort. In addition to their individual gains, coaches would be able to execute a functional, efficient practice, with all varsity athletes training under one roof at one scheduled practice.

Our Mission Statement reads “UMass Rowing provides our women with the tools and equipment necessary to succeed at the highest level of our sport”. A new fleet of ergometers would support our Mission Statement in helping our athletes achieve their individual fitness goals, ultimately impacting the success of the big boats at the starting line.

The goals of this program which would be immediately impacted by offering this opportunity to athletes include:

  1. To further the athletic and personal growth of our current-student athletes.
  2. To aide in the program’s ability to run efficient practices & yielding accurate results.
  3. Allowing UMass to remain competitive in recruiting top caliber athletes who share our vision of excellence including the showcasing of elite facilities.
  4. To provide our student athletes with the highest quality student-athlete experience available.

A tremendous commitment was made to our program when our new boathouse was opened in 2013 and in 2016, you contributed to making the Henley Regatta trip a reality.  Last year, your generosity helped in our efforts to purchase two new Vespoli 4+ boats. We’ve now identified another opportunity to positively impact the experience of our student-athletes through our goal of raising $40,000 for 40 new ergometers in 40 days! Please consider a gift today and help make this initiative a reality for the 2018 championship season. If you are interested in sponsoring an ergometer please contact Heather Palmer at hpalmer@umass.edu. Sponsorship begins at $1,000. Current rowers and young alumni (class of 2008 or younger) can  partner (max of four individuals) to sponsor an ergometer with gifts of $250 each.

Alumnae: If you are a 2006 graduate or later, your favorite erg is still in the “erg cage”! With 80% of our fleet aged 10+ years, it is easy to understand that with the millions of miles we’ve logged as a program, our equipment is simply beyond repair even after routine maintenance and repairs over the last 11 years!

Your donation will have a direct impact on the training of our 2018 roster and beyond!

40 ergs in 40 days! Ready. Set. Give!
