Summer 2017 Trip Postponed, but the Mission Continues

May 08, 2017

Thank you everyone who has graciously supported the Summer 2017 Trip to Lombok, Indonesia. Due to budget constraints, SPA has opted to postpone the trip to next Summer, which will also give an entire year more to prepare.

We here at SPA want to thank everyone for supporting our registered student organization in its infancy as an entirely student-run group homegrown in UMass Amherst. Every dollar given is a step forward in SPA's mission of bringing sustainability abroad, while greening the campus through various initiatives that we are planning for Fall 2017.

I have also been in contact with Kevin Moforte from the Amherst-based NGO, Upward Ventures, and we will be collaborating on a Winter 2018 project to interview locals of Las Malvinas, Dominican Republic in order to launch a Kickstarter to fund a local social enterprise Las Malvinas Water Co.

Sincerely,

Bryan

Sustainability Projects Abroad tables at 'A Climate for Change' event at Du Bois Library

April 02, 2017

Sustainability Projects Abroad (SPA) tabled at the 'A Climate for Change' event at the Du Bois Library yesterday. We want to thank everyone who stopped by our table to try (filtered!) campus pond water and talk with our team members.

The SPA team had a great time meeting UMass Amherst students, staff, and faculty interested in sustainability. We had amazing conversations with people who had questions about who we were and what we planned to do for the campus and for the world. We also met members of other sustainability RSOs on campus like the Eco-Reps and the Climateers.

A special shout out goes out to Professor Emeritus Alan Swedlund of the UMass Amherst Anthropology Department for sponsoring a Hollow Fiber Membrane water filter that can provide 150 gallons of water a day for 10 years for a village household or community.

So far, we have reached 1% of our target of $5000. The road ahead may be tough but we are committed to do our best to reach the target of funding a team to be able to conduct a feasibility study on the clean water and energy needs of villages in Lombok, Indonesia.

We will be tabling next at the following events:

  • April 8th, 1-4pm: 5-College International Festival @ Amherst Commons

  • April 21st, 9am-4pm: Earth Day @ Student Union North Lawn

  • April 25th, 10am-12nn: Design Building Launch @ Design Building

Our way
of Thanking You
