ASME Student Design Competition 2018-19 LAST YEAR

Who We Are

For the first time ever UMass Amherst Engineering will compete in the annual ASME Student Design Competition. This team, compiled from the sophomore, junior, and senior engineering classes contains some of the most driven and engaged students you’ll find at UMass. Each and every one of us has pledged 2 to 5+ hours per week towards this project, and whatever we don’t already know we will learn. Between us we have experience from past design competitions, relevant internships, and over a decade of programming experience. Each and every one of us greatly wants to see UMass succeed, and we are grateful for any donations.

The Competition

This year’s competition is four way robot soccer, and we're excited because this is the type of competition to be won with cleverness over brute force.

The field will be 5m x 5m and our goals will be 0.5m x 0.5m meters. The “soccer balls” will be tennis balls and there will be 8 of them in the center of the field. We are tasked with creating as many robots as we’d like so long as they start within the half meter cubed penalty box and never return for the rest of the game. We have point incentives for scoring colored balls in like colored goals, and despite our ability to make a fleet of robots we may only control one ball at a time.

The Road Ahead

We're already hard at work creating prototype models and testing our hypotheses. By the time of the first competition next semester we plan on having a competitive fleet of refined and heavily tested robots.

Our Thanks

Money raised will go towards parts and travel, but ultimately it will provide experience and an outlet for eleven eager students. This is the time we need experience the most, and the completion of this project could be the differentiating factor that gets some of us into internships and jobs. Once funded we truly believe we can and will build a fleet of robots that all donors would be proud to put their names on, and a fleet that will put on display the talent and ability that UMass Amherst cultivates.
